Winter in the UK can be harsh on your garden. Between the freezing temperatures, relentless rain, and occasional snow, your outdoor space usually takes a beating. As the days finally start to get longer and warmer, you’re probably itching to get back outside. But before you fire up the barbecue, your deck needs a little attention.

The good news is that unlike traditional timber, your composite decking doesn’t need sanding, staining, or sealing. However, a quick seasonal refresh will ensure it looks its best for the months ahead. Here is how to get your deck spring-ready in an afternoon.

Clear the Debris

Start with a blank canvas. Over the winter, leaves, twigs, and moss have likely gathered in the corners and gaps of your deck. This organic matter holds moisture, which can encourage mould growth if left too long.

Grab a broom with stiff bristles and give the entire surface a thorough sweep. Make sure you clear out the gaps between boards to ensure proper drainage and airflow. If you have potted plants sitting directly on the deck, move them to check for trapped dirt underneath.

The Wash Down

Once the surface is clear, it’s time for a wash. You generally don’t need a pressure washer for composite decking—in fact, using one on a high setting too close to the boards can sometimes damage the surface finish.

A bucket of warm, soapy water and a soft-bristle brush are usually all you need. Use a specialised composite deck cleaner or mild dish soap. Scrub gently in the direction of the grain to lift dirt and any winter grime. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose to prevent soap residue from leaving a film on your boards.

Check for Wear and Tear

While your deck is drying, take a moment to inspect the structure. Composite decking is incredibly durable, but it’s always smart to check the fixings. Look for any loose screws or clips and tighten them up. Check the fascia boards and the edges where the deck meets your house or garden walls to ensure everything is secure.

Add Seasonal Touches

Now for the fun part. With the cleaning done, your deck is ready to become a living space again.

  • Furniture: Bring your furniture out of storage. If you have metal furniture, check the feet to ensure they have rubber or plastic caps that won’t scratch your deck surface.
  • Greenery: Add some spring colour with potted bulbs like daffodils or tulips. Raised planters look fantastic on composite decks and help break up the space.
  • Lighting: As the evenings are still quite dark, consider adding solar string lights or lanterns to create a cosy atmosphere.

By spending just an hour or two on these simple steps, you extend the life of your investment and create a welcoming space ready for that first sunny weekend.
